Dental implants and oral surgery in China
What a national pricing reform did to implant costs, how a two-trip plan actually works, and where the teaching stomatology hospitals are.
Dental implants in China typically cost $700–1,400 each and a full arch $7,000–14,000, against roughly $3,000–5,000 and $20,000–35,000 in the United States. A 2023 national bulk-procurement reform cut implant prices sharply. Full-arch work usually needs two trips, four to six months apart.
Why implants are cheap here specifically
Not because the implants are different. China buys medical devices through centralised bulk procurement, negotiating national prices on behalf of the whole public system, and in 2023 it applied that to dental implants. Prices fell sharply and stayed down. The systems placed are the same international brands a North American practice would use.
Dental work is also the treatment people most often postpone indefinitely, because it is rarely covered, rarely urgent, and expensive enough to keep deferring. A full arch at $20,000–35,000 becomes something you live around. At a third of that, it becomes a decision you can actually make.
What we coordinate
Single and multiple implants
Titanium implant, abutment and crown, using the same international systems — Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem — that a North American practice would place. The implant is placed, left to integrate with the bone, and restored on a second visit.
Full-arch restoration
All-on-4, All-on-6 and similar approaches, replacing a full upper or lower arch on a small number of implants. This is where the saving is largest in absolute terms, and where most dental travel actually happens.
Crowns, bridges and veneers
Ceramic and zirconia restorations, usually completed within a single trip because the laboratory work is done on site at the larger hospitals.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery
Impacted wisdom teeth, bone grafting and sinus lifts where the jaw needs preparing for implants, cyst removal, and corrective jaw surgery. The teaching stomatology hospitals handle the complex end of this routinely.
What it costs
| Treatment | China | United States | Trips |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dental implant, per implant | $700 – $1,400 | $3,000 – $5,000 | 2 trips, or one extended stay |
| Full-arch implants, per arch | $7,000 – $14,000 | $20,000 – $35,000 | 2 trips, roughly 4–6 months apart |
Bone grafting or a sinus lift adds to both cost and timeline, and whether you need one is only knowable from a scan. See all indicative costs.
Plan for two trips, not one
An implant is placed, then left four to six months to fuse with the bone before the permanent crown goes on. That is biology, not scheduling, and no hospital worth using will compress it to suit a holiday. Same-day “teeth in a day” protocols exist and suit some cases, but they are not universally appropriate and anyone offering them to everybody is selling rather than assessing.
So the realistic shape is a first trip of one to two weeks, a gap of several months at home, and a shorter second trip. Crowns, bridges and veneers on their own usually fit in a single visit. We price both trips up front so the total is not a surprise.
Where dental work sits
China’s national ranking lists dedicated stomatology hospitals — teaching hospitals for dentistry and oral surgery — separately from general hospitals. Among the cities we coordinate in:
- Beijing — a national stomatology hospital, and 21 of China’s top 100 hospitals overall.
- Chengdu — a national stomatology hospital, and 4 of China’s top 100 hospitals overall.
What to send us
A recent panoramic X-ray, and a CBCT scan if you have one — implant planning depends on bone volume, and a photograph of your teeth cannot show it. Add any treatment plan or quote you have already been given at home, which makes the comparison concrete rather than abstract.
Think about aftercare first
Implants need maintenance, and occasionally something needs adjusting. Before you commit, work out who will look after them at home — some dentists are reluctant to take on work they did not place. It is a solvable problem and a much smaller one if you solve it beforehand. Nothing on this page is dental advice.
